We walk out of town into the Torre valley and stop at the viewpoint, the spire in front. Then we take the Madre e Hija lakes trail, which hardly anyone walks, with Fitz Roy reflected in the water. In the afternoon we reach the camp: the tent set up, the stove lit and a hot dinner.

We leave in the dark with headlamps: from the camp it is a little over an hour uphill. At the top, Fitz Roy turns red with the first light, before anyone from town arrives. We go down for breakfast at the camp and the afternoon is free: a nap, the river, the forest. A second night up there.

If Fitz Roy was hidden yesterday, we climb to Laguna de los Tres again in the dark. If you already have it, the morning is yours: sleep in or go up for another light. After breakfast we walk down the Río Blanco valley, with the detour to the Piedras Blancas Glacier, to the Río Eléctrico bridge. From there, a transfer to town and a night at the hotel.
Camp to the lake and back is 3 to 4 hours; the walk down to the bridge, 4 to 5.

Poincenot Camp

At Poincenot, in the forest by the Río Blanco, an hour below Laguna de los Tres. A heated dome for dinner and breakfast, and tents already set up with a sleeping pad and a mountain sleeping bag. Open 15 October to 20 April.

Questions

Why two sunrises?

Because the summit of Fitz Roy is often covered, even when town is clear. With two dawns up there, your chances of seeing the red mountain double. If the first one works, the second is for going up again or sleeping in.

Can I bring a tripod and heavy gear?

Yes. The tent, the sleeping bag and the food are already at the camp, so your pack is for the camera, clothes and water.

Will the guide wait for my photos?

Yes. The guide is just for you and walks at your pace: we stop wherever you want and wait for the light.

When can I go?

From 15 October to 20 April, while the camp is set up. In April the lenga forest turns red and yellow.

Is the airport transfer included?

Yes: we pick you up at El Calafate airport and take you back, on the transfer that best fits your flight. If you are already in El Chaltén, there is a cheaper version without the transfer.

Can the order of the days change?

Yes. If you prefer another order, tell us before you arrive and we arrange it.

Are the hikes in a group?

No: the guide walks only with you, from one person up. If you would rather join a group, write to us and we tell you which dates there are.

What if I travel alone?

You can: the guide walks only with you. The price is in the table, under "1 person".

How fit do I need to be?

Able to walk 6 to 8 hours in a day, with climbs. No mountain experience needed. If in doubt, write to us and we will look at it.

Which hotel will I stay at?
