OUR STORY

A Story Written in Patagonia’s Mountains

Since 1995, Fitz Roy Expediciones has been exploring, guiding and sharing the wild landscapes of El Chaltén.

Alberto del Castillo arrived in El Chaltén during the early years of the village, drawn by a place that was still wild and unknown to most travelers — a land of mountains, glaciers and endless landscapes.

Since then, he has dedicated much of his life to exploring Southern Patagonia, walking its valleys, discovering new routes and sharing these places with people from all over the world.

In 1995, he founded Fitz Roy Expediciones, one of the first adventure companies in the area. His years of experience in the mountains led to the creation of the Huemul Circuit, today recognized as one of Patagonia’s most remarkable multi-day treks.

Over the years, Alberto’s work has remained deeply connected to the region, not only through Fitz Roy Expediciones but also through Estancia Cristina, where as president he continues helping preserve and share the history, culture and landscapes of this unique corner of Patagonia.

Alberto Del Castillo

Founder

In 1995 by Alberto del Castillo, Fitz Roy Expediciones was created from years spent exploring and working in the mountains of Southern Patagonia.

Alberto was part of the early days of El Chaltén, when many of the trails and mountain routes that are known today were still being discovered and explored. His experience in the region led to the creation of the Huemul Circuit, now one of Patagonia’s most recognized multi-day treks.

His work has always been closely linked to preserving and sharing Patagonia’s landscapes and history. Today, Alberto is also president of Estancia Cristina, one of the region’s most unique historical places.

Almost four decades later, Fitz Roy Expediciones continues with the same idea: creating authentic mountain experiences guided by local knowledge, respect for nature and a lifetime spent in Patagonia.

Josefina Del Castillo

Operations Manager & Mountain Guide

Born and raised in El Chaltén, Josefina grew up surrounded by Patagonia’s mountains, developing a lifelong connection with the wilderness from an early age. Together with her father, she spent countless days hiking, climbing, and skiing, experiences that shaped both her passion for the mountains and her deep respect for nature.

As a Mountain Guide, she has explored remote areas, participated in the development of new routes across the region, and spent years sharing Patagonia with travelers from around the world.

Her passion for the outdoors has also taken her across the globe, where she has traveled extensively, discovering different mountain landscapes, cultures, and ways of experiencing nature. These journeys have enriched her perspective while strengthening her appreciation for the place she proudly calls home.

Today, she brings her local knowledge, international experience, and passion for exploration to the new generation of Fitz Roy Expediciones, continuing a story that began in 1995.

Nicolas Paratore

Operations Manager

After years traveling across different continents, exploring mountains, oceans, and diverse cultures, Nicolas discovered that the most meaningful journeys are built through authentic experiences and human connections.

His path through the world of adventure, diving, photography, and storytelling brings a new perspective to Fitz Roy Expediciones. As part of the new generation of the company, he works to continue the spirit that began in El Chaltén in 1985, combining its pioneering history with a fresh vision of modern adventure travel.

Every journey is built by a community.

More Than a Team

While a mountain guide may lead the trail, every unforgettable adventure is the result of many people working together.

Behind every expedition is a dedicated network of certified guides, assistant guides, drivers, cooks, hotel teams, local suppliers, and friends who have spent years living and working in Patagonia. Their experience, commitment, and genuine hospitality are an essential part of every journey we create.

For us, Fitz Roy Expediciones has never been just a guiding company. It is a local community brought together by a shared passion for these mountains and by the desire to help others experience Patagonia with the same respect and wonder that have inspired us for generations.

When you join one of our adventures, you are not simply hiring a guide you become part of a story that continues to be written every day in the heart of Patagonia.

Every trail has a story.

We would be honored to share ours with you.
