What the table says
January is the windiest month: the daily peak gust averages 67 km/h and 56 % of days pass 60. December and February follow. At the other end, May averages 50 km/h and has 13 days in 30 under 40 km/h up high. It is Patagonia’s paradox: the months with most daylight and most people are the windiest, and the calm months are the short-day ones.
Which month to choose for hiking
- March and April
- The best balance: less wind than midsummer, still 11 to 13 hours of daylight, the lenga forest red in April and fewer people on the trails.
- November and December
- The windiest, but with 15 to 16 hours of daylight and snow still on the summits: the good days are spectacular, and there is time to wait for one.
- January and February
- Full summer: warm, long and windy. It is when we run most outings, because stays are longer and the day always comes.
- May to September
- The calmest, with snow in town and few services open. Laguna Torre and Capri are walkable; the Tres moraine depends on the snow.
