The Experience

Trek Through a Landscape Revealed by Ice

Explore one of the most remote landscapes in Los Glaciares National Park on a full-day expedition combining navigation, 4×4 exploration and guided trekking.

The journey begins by sailing across Lago Argentino toward Estancia Cristina. From the estancia, specially equipped 4×4 vehicles climb through the Feruglio Range to the only land-accessible viewpoint overlooking the Upsala Glacier.

From there, a 12 km guided trek descends gradually through the Fossil Canyon, where marine fossils, exposed rock formations and glacial marks reveal the natural history of this extraordinary Patagonian landscape.

Navigate among icebergs, reach the Upsala Glacier viewpoint by 4×4 and hike through a canyon shaped by millions of years of glacial history.

Description

The expedition begins at Puerto Punta Bandera, navigating through the northern arm of Lago Argentino and the Cristina Channel. Along the way, the boat passes through immense glacial landscapes and icebergs calved from the Upsala Glacier.

After arriving at Estancia Cristina, the journey continues by 4×4 along mountain roads that were covered by glacial ice until relatively recently. A short walk leads to a privileged viewpoint overlooking the eastern front of the Upsala Glacier, Lake Guillermo and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

From the viewpoint, the guided trek begins through the Fossil Canyon. The route follows a gradual descent across rocky glacial terrain, passing exposed marine fossils and formations shaped by the movement and retreat of the glacier.

After stopping for a packed lunch, the final section crosses the broad Cristina Valley before returning to the estancia and beginning the navigation back to Puerto Punta Bandera.
