Where Patagonia becomes truly wild

Crossing Helsingfors – Estancia Cristina

The Crossing from Helsinfors to Estancia Cristina is one of Patagonia’s least traveled expeditions, connecting two historic corners of Los Glaciares National Park through valleys, glacial moraines, hidden passes and remote camps that few visitors ever experience.

For four days we travel without marked trails, navigating with the knowledge that only local mountain guides develop after years exploring these mountains. Every camp is chosen according to the terrain, the weather and the rhythm of the group, making every crossing slightly different from the last.

This is not simply a trek.

It is a genuine Patagonian expedition.

Day 1

Helsingfors – Seno Moyan

Distance: 10 km

Walking time: 6–7 hours

Elevation gain: 900 m

Camp: Seno Moyano area

Meals included: Dinner / or according to final program version

The journey begins at Hostería Helsinfors, a remote and historic place surrounded by mountains, forests and the waters of Lago Viedma.

After meeting the guide and reviewing the equipment, we leave the comfort of the estancia behind and begin walking towards Seno Moyano. The first part of the day introduces us gradually to the character of the expedition: native vegetation, open slopes, changing views and a growing sense of isolation.

As we gain elevation, the landscape opens and the scale of Patagonia becomes clear. This is not a crowded trail. From the first day, we enter a territory where the guide’s local knowledge is essential.

The camp is established near Seno Moyano, depending on wind exposure, water access and terrain conditions. The first night in the mountains is usually quiet and powerful: the lake below, the mountains around us and the feeling that the expedition has truly begun.

This is the most demanding day of the crossing.

We leave camp early and move deeper into wild terrain. The route is not marked, and there is no single fixed trail to follow. The guide reads the land constantly: the safest line through the vegetation, the condition of the ground, the wind, the visibility and the rhythm of the group.

During the day, we cross two mountain passes and enter one of the most impressive sections of the journey. The views towards Cerro Norte begin to dominate the landscape, while the terrain becomes rougher, more alpine and more exposed.

This is where the expedition shows its real character. It is physical, remote and technical in the sense of mountain travel—not climbing, but real route finding through a changing Patagonian environment.

The camp is usually located near the moraine of Cerro Norte, in the most protected area available. After a long day, this is one of the most memorable camps of the expedition: surrounded by rock, ice, wind and silence.

Day 2

Seno Moyano – Cerro Norte Moraine

Distance: 15 km

Walking time: 7–8 hours

Elevation gain: 900 m

Camp: Cerro Norte Moraine area

Meals included: Breakfast, box lunch and dinner

Day 3

Cerro Norte Moraine – Río Norte Canyon

Distance: 9 km

Walking time: 6–7 hours

Elevation gain: 600 m

Camp: Río Norte area

Meals included: Breakfast, box lunch and dinner

After breakfast, we continue the journey by crossing a smaller mountain pass and gradually entering the Río Norte Canyon.

This day has a different rhythm. The terrain is still remote and demanding, but the landscape begins to change. The views open towards Lakes Anita and Pearson, offering a wider perspective of this hidden side of Patagonia.

The route combines rocky sections, open ground, glacial features and valley travel. It is a day to understand the scale of the crossing: we are not visiting one viewpoint; we are moving through an entire mountain system.

The camp is established close to Río Norte, depending on the safest and most comfortable conditions available. By this point, the group is fully immersed in expedition life: walking, reading the weather, setting camp, sharing meals and moving as a team.

This is often one of the most beautiful evenings of the journey, with open skies, cold air and the deep silence of a valley far from any road.

The final trekking day is shorter, but emotionally one of the strongest.

After several days in remote mountain terrain, we begin descending the valley towards Estancia Cristina. The walking becomes more direct, and slowly the landscape starts to soften. The sense of isolation remains, but there is a clear feeling of arrival.

Estancia Cristina appears as a historic Patagonian outpost surrounded by mountains, glaciers and immense open space. After days of wilderness camping, arriving here on foot gives the place a completely different meaning.

This is not just the end of the trek. It is the closing of a real crossing: from Helsinfors to Cristina, from one remote world to another, through terrain that very few travelers ever experience.

Upon arrival, the group organizes equipment and rests. Accommodation at Estancia Cristina can be arranged separately, depending on the final program and availability.

Day 4

Río Norte Canyon – Estancia Cristina

Distance: 6 km

Walking time: 4–5 hours

Descent: 400 m

Arrival: Estancia Cristina

Meals included: Breakfast and box lunch

A Journey Through Patagonia

There are many beautiful places in Patagonia, but very few that remain as untouched as this crossing.

Walking from Helsinfors to Estancia Cristina means spending several days far from roads, mountain huts and marked trails. We move through valleys, glacial moraines, rivers and open country where nature still sets the pace.

Every crossing is different. The weather, the wind and the conditions in the mountains help shape each day, which is why our guides adapt the route and choose each campsite according to the terrain and the safety of the group.

For us, this journey is not about covering a certain distance. It is about travelling through the landscape with respect, understanding where we are and experiencing a part of Patagonia that very few people ever have the chance to discover.

Since 1985, we have guided people through these mountains with the same philosophy: move carefully, travel responsibly and let Patagonia reveal itself one step at a time.
