Cerro Madsen is one of the classic alpine ascents in the Fitz Roy Massif, offering experienced hikers and climbers the opportunity to reach a true Patagonian summit with outstanding views over Mount Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
Since Fitz Roy Expediciones was founded in 1995, our local mountain guides have been leading ascents in this range, developing an intimate understanding of the terrain, weather patterns and mountain conditions that define every climb.

Our adventure begins early in El Chaltén, following the classic trail toward Río Blanco through beautiful lenga forests.
After leaving the main trekking route, the ascent becomes progressively steeper as we climb rocky slopes toward Cerro Madsen. The terrain is varied and physically demanding, requiring careful footing and a steady pace while our guides provide support and interpret the surrounding landscape.
The final approach rewards every effort with one of the most impressive viewpoints in Patagonia. Standing on the summit, you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, Viedma Glacier and the endless Southern Patagonian Ice Field.
After spending time at the summit, we carefully descend back to El Chaltén following the same route.

Patagonian weather is famously unpredictable and conditions can change rapidly, even during the summer months. We recommend dressing in layers and carrying waterproof clothing throughout the day to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Most of our day treks do not require previous mountain experience, although a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Some hikes, such as Laguna de los Tres, involve a full day of hiking with significant elevation gain, while others are more accessible.
